43/365

Only because I own one am I trying to learn how to use it. My flash! I am completely baffled by how to use a silly EX 430 II flash. I also have a wonderful round reflector to bounce my flash off of.... as to get some beautiful fill light on the dark side of the face. This was the only shot I got that I kind of liked. The flash was facing left (her right) and I had the reflector to my right (just outside the photo) to fill that side of her face with light bounce off the wall. Did it work? Does it look right? Feedback appreciated. I don't care for the lousy and somewhat odd shaped and distracting catch lights, although they are better than having little dots from head on flash. Happy Friday!

  1. I think that they look great and would not have guessed that you even used a flash! To me, it looks like she is standing by a window.

  2. wow... I am no professional photographer by all means... so my advice may not be what you want... but I love this shot. Her eyes look amazing. The clarity is great. I like the soft bit of light on the left side of her face. Did you use a gold reflector to bounce off?

  3. Thanks for the comments! I used a white reflector (on the right side of the photo / her left) and my flash was facing to the left / her right. I have a gold reflector, but I'm just starting my journey with flash. It's so scary!

  4. I agree with these guys ... would have never guessed it was a flash. It looks like she is standing next to a window. I think it's a great job! The flash is a entire new world :)

  5. I agree it looks beautiful. I have used ocf a few times only because a lot of my session were seniors and it was a Have To because of the formal year book pictures. I have 2 that I use of camera on stands shooting through umbrella and a reflecting umbrella. I opted for the portable stands so I could use them on location if the light was getting low. My FAVORITE time to use OCF is just when the sun is going down and the you need the light from the OCF but still want the natural ambient drama around you. I learned alot from Rock that OCF... but I learned even more from the strobist blog. He list everything from a to b. http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/
I have a few if you would like to see them, just let me know. Hope that helps.

  6. I would have never known there was a flash used either. I think you always get great light in your shots and don't need the flash but if I had one I would want to learn how to use it too. Keep us updated on your progress.
