Constructive Feedback Friday

This is a picture of my sweet little prince charming. He runs. He is rarely still for more than a tenth of a second, so my outdoor shots are always better than my inside shots of him. In this picture, we were at the park and there was a storm approaching. I absolutely L.O.V.E. the sunlight right before a storm. Something in the mixture of dark clouds and vibrant sunlight shooting through gives a heavenly golden effect to photos. This picture is one of my favorites, except for the shadow on his face. The sunlight was illuminating one side and not the other giving him a bionic eye look on the right and dark side on the left. Normally I shoot in RAW and I'm not sure why this one wasn't, but it's too late now. I've edited it to the best of my ability, but any feedback and constructive criticism or helpful hints would be wonderful! Thank you!!

I used a 28-135mm lens
Shot at 135mm
f/5.6 at 1/250
ISO 100

Here is the original SOOC

Here is my edit

And after seeing it on my blog, I edited in another texture... multi-colored glitter

Sweet "Drewmark19" commented about how to fix the eyes to match each other and here's what I came up with...

  1. What a great edit. I love the texture. I'd play with it even a touch more and try and lighten and sharpen the eyes up on their own layer, then applying a mask and painting in just the dark part of the eyes. He has such great eyes.

  2. Your edit is way better than anything I would do, so I'm not sure I could be any help here. The only thing I might try is lightening up that left eye. I'm not confident, though, that it could be done without looking fake. Really, it is a beautiful shot and a beautiful edit.

  3. Okay, I had another idea for this. I selected the eye that has good lighting with the magic wand, copied it in a new layer and then overlayed it on top of the other eye. I then decreased the opacity in the left eye to account for the shade. It looks really good except for the fact that the two irises are absolutely identical. :) That might be an option for you.

  4. HOw in the world did you get his face lightened up? When I'm outside and get that shadow it always aggravates me but I have no clue how to get it lighter. I love the pic!!! I think it looks great just the way it is...I'm sure you want some tips and all but I'm not the person to give those to you :)

  6. Do you use Photoshop? In my version (CS3) I can open up any photo in Camera RAW...even a jpg. This has been awesome because then I can work with the fill light which usually opens up the faces very nicely.

I'm sure you already knew that, but thought I'd mention it just in case anyone else wasn't aware of that.

    Beautiful, gorgeous photo Catherine!

  8. Making the eyes match helped this photo a whole bunch. Having one beautiful eye lighter distracted me. Love the textures!

  9. Your fix looks great! I don't think anyone who didn't see the before shot would know that was the same eye.

  10. I can't add anything constructive. I can only read the comments and hope to learn : ).
